Ginger Was Everything Nice

Our lovely Ginger Cat went to heaven yesterday afternoon. We adopted her as a senior cat of 11 years old, about 6 years ago. Ginger's owner had passed away, leaving Ginger with her son. He was unable to keep Ginger because his fiancée was highly allergic to cats. We were happy to take her in.

She had always been "an only child" and was very shy around our other pets. Ginger quickly decided she liked the quiet sanctuary of our bedroom, and specifically, my large walk-in closet, where she would peacefully sleep the days away under the lower rack of hanging clothes.  She would come out in the evenings when we were upstairs and watch TV with us....this was her private domain, away from the rest of "the zoo." The exception, (as always) was our dear doggie, Eliza Jane, who befriends every single pet she's ever met. She became Ginger's watchful guardian towards the end, knowing, as dogs do, that Ginger was soon to depart for the Rainbow Bridge.

Because Ginger spent lots of time in my closet, we thought that she would love to be the "mascot" for Carolyn's Closet, when we were developing that feature for the Denim and Company section of QVC.com.

After all, she was quite a fashionista kitty with a decided knack for putting together great looking ensembles! She became known as "the orange kitty who lived in my closet", to many of my lovely Denim and Company customers.

Six months ago, shortly after our senior Cocker Spaniel, Johnnie, lost his battle with cancer, Ginger let us know she was not feeling like her old self. That awful "Big C" had returned, this time for Ginger. But, at age 16+ she let us know she was ready to put up a grand fight...and she did. With the help of our vet and a monthly shot, she rebounded and was soon feeling like her old self for the next 6 months. A couple of weeks ago, she started to slip, and this time, she was too tired to continue the battle. She slept her last few days away, peacefully, cozy and warm, while I reminded her of all of her new friends who would be waiting for her at the Bridge, including Johnnie, Henry, Orangie Porangie (our first Orange Tabby), Misha and many other furry and feathered friends who have departed our lives, but never our hearts.

She was always such a sweet, darling old girl, never complaining, always kind, always peaceful. We loved her dearly and will miss that sweet little orange and white face and big green-gold eyes looking up at us so wisely and contentedly. Rest in Peace, dear Ginger Cat. We will never forget you. XO

As a postscript, I know Ginger would like me to add that it is always a wise choice to adopt a senior pet. They have so much to give and in many cases, like Ginger’s, are in need of a loving home because their owner has passed away, leaving them behind. You will be rewarded 100-fold, with the joy they will bring to your life. Please don't overlook the senior pets when visiting your local animal shelter.

From My Garden to Yours

I thought you might enjoy seeing a few "end of summer" garden photos from the past week at our place.

There are many more, but I've picked a few of my favorites. I hope you had a lovely summer in your own garden spot! Stay tuned and keep checking my Facebook page for some fall garden photos coming next month!

XO, your gardening pal,

Carolyn

A special spot for Johnnie in our garden.....it's near a bench we relax on in the evening under a beautiful tree canopy. Recognize the Plow & Hearth Stepping Stone?

This is the garden spot that my late brother, Matt, started 7 years ago. It has grown into one of the most lovely places on our property. I believe angels tend to it when I am sleeping. :)

A lovely hanging basket of succulents, hens and chicks, etc...inspired by my friends, The Walliens, of Roberta's Unique Gardens.

These are my "time out" angels. They are sitting in "the corner" of my backyard.

This is one of many Cottage Farms hydrangea trees in my garden. With last winter being so harsh, many of the hydrangea plants refused to bloom this summer....they took a long time to "wake up" this time around. However, the hydrangea trees were as spectacular as ever!

Homemade Apple Crisp: A Gracie Family Recipe

$

0

I've had this recipe written on a piece of scratch paper since 1981, back when I had my very first apartment after college. I had raided my mom's recipe box and scribbled down my absolute favorites from her vast and yummy collection!

This is one she made up herself. It may look similar to one you've tried before, but there's just something special about the way this tastes, and it turns out perfectly every time! It's another wonderful apple recipe for fall and best of all: it's quick! Be sure to check out all of my recipes on QVC.com!

Ingredients:

2–1/2 cups apples, sliced
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 cup butter or margarine

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease or spray Pam on an 8'' x 8'' x 2'' baking pan.

2. Arrange apples in the pan evenly and sprinkle them with lemon juice.

3. Mix butter, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl until crumbly. Spread this mixture evenly over the apples.

4. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until apples are tender. Makes four servings.

Serving suggestion:
Serve warm in individual bowls with a bit of milk poured over the apple crisp. Or for even more indulgence, add a small dollop of whipped topping or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It's so good, you might want to make a double recipe!

QVC Girlfrends Weekend with a Stan Herman Fashion Show!

$

Last Friday night, I was asked to host one of the events taking place as part of another super FUN QVC Girlfriends Weekend! This was to be a special Fashion Show put on by none other than the wonderful Stan Herman and Stan asked if I would help him host  the show. Of course I said YES and then, he added, that he would love for me to bring along one or two of my sweet doggies to help "model" some of the PJ's! (Actually they modeled part of a set of PJ's Stan designed for the entire family...Mom and Dad, kids AND pets! (There were PJ's for cats too, but none of mine were brave enough to come along!)

Our lovely QVC lady guests enjoyed delicious finger foods, and drinks, provided by the Desmond Hotel restaurant and I had a chance to mingle and chat with them while waiting for the fashion show to begin!

Stan had also asked some of his favorite QVC models to be there, including Jackie, Monica, Maria and Joy! Jackie and Monica both brought their 8 year old sons along to help model the kids PJ's!

They were both so cute and looked adorable!

At the start of the show, Stan asked if he could speak for a few minutes about his good friend, Joan Rivers. Stan, like all of us, was so very sad to hear of Joan's passing. He shared several wonderful (and funny) anecdotes about Joan over the years.

Later, we all tried on pairs of Joan Rivers Sunglasses and took "Red Carpet/Hollywood Style" photos!

My little fur babies, Daffodil and Maisie stole the show when they came out in their Stan Herman doggie PJ's! You could tell they just KNEW how extra-cute they looked in those comfy, cozy, pet-friendly outfits!

As an extra special surprise, our team presented Stan with a Happy Birthday Cake, as his birthday is this week! He was so surprised and delighted to see a cake in the shape of a beautiful bath robe!

Overall, it was a wonderful evening and everyone had a terrific time! Thank you Stan Herman, for being such an incredible guy and designing such beautiful and comfortable PJ's and loungewear for our QVC customers! And thank you to all the wonderful ladies who came out and had such fun with us!

XO,

Carolyn

Happy World Animal Day!

I've felt a great kinship to animals my entire life...growing up with the pets we had in our family, then later as an adult with pets of my own, and as a pet rescue volunteer. While living in Los Angeles, I had the wonderful opportunity of becoming a Docent at the L.A. Zoo, which allowed me to get to know all kinds of animals and birds from all over the world. It was fascinating and taught me how every single creature has an important purpose on this planet, and how each deserves our care and respect. I hope you will join me in celebrating World Animal Day today... Visit your local zoo or animal shelter and learn about the animals with your kids or grandkids....read a book about animals with them....and certainly give the animals in YOUR care some extra attention today! You know you can always find cute fur baby photos on my Facebook page, or shop some my favorite pet mama and papa picks on toGather. For now, here are some pictures from my recent visit to the North Carolina Zoo....

Train selfie with my travelin' buddy

Giraffes at the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro. They are one of my favorite animals. Did you know they have blue tongues and their babies are born 6 feet tall?!

The NC Zoo has a beautiful lion pride....with four new baby cubs born recently! They had 2 boys and 2 girls. Here their mama keeps a watchful eye while I chatted with her over the barrier.

Three of the month-old cubs having a nap...the other cub was hanging out with his Pop....

Pop (aka King of the Jungle) and now, occasional babysitter.

So glad we have a day to celebrate the entire animal kingdom (though I know many of us celebrate them everyday!) Do you have a favorite animal??

Greetings, Denim and Company Pals!!

It's that time of year again at the Q, and Gary and I have been delving into all of the fabulous possibilities within the Denim and Company collection for this year's holiday gifts!! We've narrowed it down to TWO items that we both LOVE…and we  once again need YOUR assistance in choosing YOUR favorite between the two! It's DESIGNER VS DIVA…GIFTS!! Below you will find descriptions of two NEW Denim and Company items that Gary and I feel would make wonderful gifts for someone special on our holiday gift lists. After looking them over, please VOTE on the one you would most like to GIVE OR GET this year!! We'll tally your votes at the end of one week, THEN, reveal which item got the most customer votes AND present them both in our Designer vs Diva Gift Picks Denim and Company showon Tuesday, October 28th, at 11:00am! We'll ALSO reveal which of US chose WHICH item, and both will be available for you to order. (You can also order them in advance if you like, on QVC.com!)  For now, you tell US, which one do you like the most?? Thanks for voting and don't forget we love to see your comments and feedback as well!!

Here are the two item descriptions:

A259212…DENIM AND COMPANY DRAPE FRONT VEST WITH CABLE DETAIL

We LOVE this new Denim and Company item! It is gorgeous on, and is right on trend for this Fall and Winter season! As a GIFT, we know this will be something women of all ages and sizes will really like having in their wardrobe! It is done in a cozy cotton/acrylic knit, and features a beautiful cable design on the drape-style front. It also features ribbing detail on the bottom hem, neckline and sleeve and has a solid knit back. You simply slip it on over any of your favorite knit tops, woven shirts or turtlenecks, along with a great pair of jeans, leggings or trousers or even skirt or dress....add your boots....and it's INSTANT CHIC! It is also very figure-flattering and adds a nice layer of warmth, without a lot of weight or bulk. It conceals those "trouble zones" without making you look "frumpy"! You'll find it has a very flattering length and we especially love that it comes to longer "points" in the front.  It is available in MISSY OR PLUS and is considered a "semi-fitted" piece, which follows the lines of body with added wearing easy. It is NOT a big, shapeless piece. The length in Missy ranges from 27-1/8 to 28-7/16 inches....and in Plus, the length ranges from 29-1/2 to 30-3/4 inches. Care is easy: Machine wash and dry flat. Color choices are TOPS for this season: Chestnut, Fall Pink, Fall Grey, Natural or Navy.

A259253…DENIM AND COMPANY FAUX LEATHER JACKET WITH FAUX SHERPA COLLAR

First of all, did someone say FAUX?? You would NEVER KNOW! This faux leather moto-inspired jacket feels like the most exquisite soft, supple leather!  But with ease of care and without the higher price tag! We just know that EVERYONE will be thrilled when they open THIS GIFT!! Again, this item is one that will appeal to women of all ages and sizes, and can be worn for many different occasions...for both work and play!

This beautiful jacket is done in  the highest quality faux leather (which all the top designers are utilizing this season!) and features a soft, cozy faux-sherpa fold-over collar, zip detail front, and zippers on the sleeves (for that edgy-cool look), figure-flattering princess seams and welt pockets. It also has a soft quilted lining. It is semi-fitted, to follow the lines of the body with added wearing ease. The length in Missy sizes ranges from 25-1/2 to 27-5/8 inches and the length in Plus sizes ranges from 28 to 29-3/4 inches. You will appreciate knowing that this gorgeous jacket is also machine wash and tumble dry!! It comes in available colors of black, wine and chestnut.

Oh my goodness...decisions, decisions!! Well, you COULD make it easy on yourself by choosing BOTH...but we'd love to know which one you like the most as a gift to GIVE or a gift to RECEIVE this holiday season. CAST YOUR VOTE below and then tune in at 11am on Tuesday, October 28th as we reveal WHICH is the DIVA PICK and WHICH is the DESIGNER PICK, as well as WHICH is the CUSTOMER FAVORITE PICK!! See you then and happy shopping!!

Carolyn

OCTOBER IS ADOPT-A-SHELTER-DOG MONTH! WOOF!!

$

Dear Fellow Pet Lovers –

As a Rescue Pet Mom, I know there are many kindred spirits among you who are Rescue Moms, Rescue Dads, and those who simply love and respect animals of all kinds. I SALUTE every one of you and will say again, how much I appreciate you, your attitude, and all that you do to help and support animals and pet rescue.

I have many rescued pets and every single one has added so much to my life, in many ways. All are different....all have so much to give, and ask so little in return. The month of October is National Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month. I ask that those of you who have already adopted a pet, whether it be a dog, a cat, a rabbit, a bird or another wonderful pet, consider adopting a dog or ANOTHER dog, to share your life as well. There are so many in need of a loving home, right in your own home town! Every animal shelter is overcrowded…every one of them could use your help, whether it be in the form of adopting, volunteering to walk the dogs or spend some quality time with them, even if you cannot adopt right now, or even helping with cleaning, organizing, mailings, or certainly monetarily. Whatever you can do, would be MOST appreciated by your local animal shelter or rescue organization.

If you ARE considering adopting a dog, here are a few tips that you may find helpful in finding a great match for you and your family:

DEFINITELY VISIT YOUR ANIMAL SHELTER FIRST

Shelter animals are not damaged goods and are not there through any fault of their own. Often their owner has passed away, and no one stepped forward to take the animal. Sometimes, hard as it is to imagine, people move....and leave their pet behind, often in an empty house.  Sometimes families no longer have the finances to take care of a pet and have to give it up. Often, pets are simply dumped by the side of the road, and wind up in a shelter. The some shelters are "no kill"....but many shelters have limited space and the pets that have been there the longest are put on the short list for being euthanized. That is why I say when you adopt a pet....you save TWO lives....the life of the pet you bring home, and the life of the pet that was able to have its space at the shelter.

TRY YOUR POTENTIAL PET OUT FIRST

Most shelters will let you spend time with the pet you are interested in...visiting, or going for a nice walk. Often the staff will be able to answer most of your questions about the dog, as they have been spending time with that pup before you came to visit. They may or may not know the dog's entire history, but they can give you a good idea of the dog's personality, health, age, and whether or not YOUR particular family unit would be best for that dog. ASK QUESTIONS!!

DON'T BE BREED-BIASED...BE FLEXIBLE

Many folks go to a shelter looking for a particular breed of dog and feel like nothing else will do. You may think you know exactly what you want, but give every dog a chance. The staff can help you determine if a particular dog has the right energy level for you, for your kids or grandkids and for your other pets. Matching energy levels to your lifestyle is more important that sex, breed, or color. Although puppies are cute, no doubt, and usually have a "clean slate", they are also ALOT of work. Are you ready for that? If not, please also consider SENIOR pets....age 7 and better. These dogs are a joy....are usually perfectly housebroken and know the rules. They are easily adaptable and are so grateful for a second chance. Perhaps their owner had to go into assisted living or another situation where they could not take their pet.  Or perhaps their owner passed away, and now the dog is alone and has no idea where their owner went. How sad to spend the rest of his life in a shelter instead of another loving home.

Whatever you decide, your life will only be improved and more joyful, when you welcome a shelter pet to share your days and nights. Pets are proven to be stress relievers, they give you unconditional love, they bring you joy and infuse your life with happy energy and fun. All they ask in return is food, shelter, a comfy bed, loving care and a pat on the head. Wow....you get ALOT in return from them!

Please visit www.ASPCA.org for more information on adopting a pet, and for lots of terrific info on being a great pet owner, including diet, veterinary info, lists of what NOT to feed your pets, poisonous plants, and so much more. If you are looking for a place to adopt a pet in YOUR town, search the internet for the SPCA, Humane Society, or pet rescue groups, and include your ZIP CODE in the search.

Please DO post photos of your rescue pets on my Facebook page ANYTIME! We love seeing their adorable furry faces!! For great pet products that I personally love on QVC.com, visit my Pet Mama ToGather page as well.

Thank you....and God Bless you AND your animals, always.

Love,

Carolyn (and my little zoo)

I love a good smoothie recipe! I like to make them for both breakfast and dessert, and this one falls somewhere in the middle. You can also swap out the frozen yogurt for regular yogurt, just add a few ice cubes!

This would be a fun alternative to apple pie after a a yummy fall meal, or as get-your-day going breakfast! Be sure to use your Vitamix to make this extra smooth and creamy!

Enjoy!

Carolyn

Dear Fellow Pet Lovers –

For my latest Fur Baby Blog, I decided to feature two of the most adorable cats on the planet, my parents' two Ragdoll cats, Sidney and Duffy!! I adore these two kitties, and every time I visit my parents, I think to myself, I need to write a blog about them, so today, here it is! AND it just so happens to be National Cat Day!!

Sidney, a female (almost two years old) and Duffy, her male counterpart (6 years old) are an inseparable pair. My folks originally had another little girl Ragdoll, named Dolly, who became ill and passed on to the Rainbow Bridge a few years back. They had acquired Duffy as a kitten, when Dolly was still living, and although they were close, and Duffy was very sad when she left, the bond they shared was not quite the same as the bond he now shares with little Sidney.  Duffy, (given an Irish name for his wee bit of red flame-tipped fur) was always a bit shy and retiring, but has totally come out of his shell thanks to Sidney's playful ways. (Sidney, who is an expert at slapping and batting and sliding her toy mice around the shiney hardwood floors of my parents' home, was named after Sidney Crosby, star hockey player for the Pittsburgh Penquins. Yes, my Dad is a Pittsburgh fan!)

Together they are one of the greatest joys of my parents' golden years, and must say, are two of the cutest, most special cats I have ever had the pleasure to become acquainted with.  They spend their days watching birds and squirrels, or my mom in the garden, on their all-season porch or perched on one of their many window seats. They love sitting on the desk while Dad works at his laptop (sometimes sitting ON the keyboard or trying to catch the documents that come out of the fax machine) In the evening they enjoy watching TV with Mom and Dad. (Their favorite show is "Too Cute" on Animal Planet, especially the Ragdoll Kitten episode!) Their built in alarm clocks wake them up early in the morning (AND my folks too) to be fed their special breakfast AND that same clock tells THEM to tell Mom and Dan when it's time to go to bed at night. It's a wonderful kitty life!

BUT, when Auntie Carolyn comes to visit, it's ALL new and interesting! The suitcase and what comes out of it...oh my! The flying birdie toy ....how high! (Somehow it disappears when Auntie C goes home) AND the kitty cat game apps on her iPad!! (Challenging every time for exactly 10 minutes and then ho-hum). Once my Dad walked into his home office where he had left his laptop closed on the floor. BOTH of the cats were sitting there staring down at it, waiting for the "Game for Cats" App to magically start playing! Too Funny!!

Ragdoll cats are one of the most popular breeds of cats for today's modern family lifestyles. They are a larger breed, and are very dog-like in many ways. They come when called, play fetch, love to cuddle and watch TV with you, run to the door when you come in from being gone. They are exceptionally gentle, and are famous for going "limp" when being picked up....hence their name, "Ragdoll". They require regular grooming, and I must say my parents are spectacular Ragdoll parents. Neither of those two cats EVER has a mat, and both have the most gorgeous coats!!  Really, ALL cats are cute.....but Ragdolls are some of the cutest! Especially these two! Can't wait to visit them in NC again soon!
