Live From LA: E.D. On Air! My Incredibly Fun Day with Ellen!

Last week, I had the most amazing time as the QVC remote team and I headed to Los Angeles for our premiere show with Ellen DeGeneres, to launch her seasonal home collection created especially for QVC, E.D. On Air! It was non-stop fun from beginning to end and I wanted to share a few notes and behind the scenes photos with all of you who have already embraced Ellen and her wonderful new home decor items, and to thank you so much for your positive feedback and support! (By the way, I am LOVING the E.D. products I have received so far, and they look fantastic in my home! Apparently, I am not the only one. I noticed on QVC.com that several of them already have 5-star customer reviews!)

Friday, October 24th was the day of the debut show on Ellen's set, at Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank. Our remote team arrived several days earlier to meet with Ellen's team. This is such a unique undertaking, combining the talents of our broadcast team with Ellen's team, who are all involved with producing her daytime show. Since we are doing a QVC show with Ellen on her own set, it requires a lot of teamwork and coordinating lots of elements to pull this off. There were so many talented people involved with the production, from producers to directors, to set designers, to lighting and sound engineers, to wardrobe, hair and makeup pros. Plus lots of other people....it was well-orchestrated insanity backstage when I arrived at around Noon on the day of the show. My amazing hair and makeup stylist, Dina, came with me on the trip... and was there for nearly every moment to make sure I looked just fabulous! A big thank you to Dina!! We had our own, very posh green room backstage at the Ellen Show at WB.

Find everything E.D. On Air here!

I met with our QVC producers and director, as well as with Ellen's executive producer and then, it was time for rehearsal! As soon as Ellen and I spotted each other, we gave each other a BIG hug and then...we were OFF...running through the entire show. Ellen told me she was so excited to be launching her new line on QVC...that she had been working really hard on it for two years and had been very much involved with every aspect; the designs, the colors, the actual items themselves. They are inspired by things she loves in her own life, things she has in her own home, themes that she loves, like animals, natural elements, clean, classic lines and colors, and vintage pieces that incorporate modern technology like her flocked trees and wreaths. She could not WAIT to show the QVC audience all of these beautiful things and tell them why she chose them for her E.D. collection!

Rehearsal was a BLAST. We were all laughing through most of it, but Ellen and I told each other we were both saving some surprises for the live show. Oh my gosh, was THAT an understatement!! Soon, the live studio audience was in place, and as with every Ellen show, it was a dancing, FUN party atmosphere throughout the set! Everyone was on their feet and SO excited for the show to begin! A huge roar went up as Ellen stepped out on stage to do her monologue, which was hilarious, of course. Then it was my turn to come out and join Ellen at the famous chairs to begin our show. Now, I have  to tell you, this  was not my first show with Ellen, and in the past, she has somehow managed to get me to not only eat cat food on live TV, but may or may not have gotten me to drink shots of whiskey with her throughout another show we did. Working with her is how I imagine Ethel felt working with Lucy...you just have to GO with it and have FUN!

The E.D. On Air Flocked Trees made the set look so beautiful

One of my favorites part of the show, playing with the Lighted Marquee Letters

So, I knew she would have some shenanigans up her sleeve for our E.D. On Air show as well, and boy was I right!  She tried to decorate me in Christmas lights and wrap me up in a throw blanket. She had me spelling all sorts of words with her Marquee Lights. She had me nearly on the floor with our gift wrapping challenge (Did you see that awful job she did wrapping the wooden candle holder?) Of course, Ellen is always funny, practically everything she says is funny. But I got HER a few times too, I am proud to say. Both of us laughed a lot...and so did the audience both in studio and at home. But there were serious moments too, as Ellen described why she was most proud of the pieces in her debut collection. The E.D. On Air collection of candles, lighting, holiday decor, linens and more is beautiful, and of the highest quality...and THAT is no joke!

The customers were definitely shopping in between the laughter, as much of our inventory dwindled as the show went on. Everyone in the studio audience received a $100 QVC gift card. As the show ended, Ellen gave me a high five and a big hug, saying how thrilled she was that our customers loved her products and that she couldn't wait to show all of us what she has planned for Spring of 2015. She is an amazing person, just the same off camera as on. I am so glad to have her as part of our QVC family and I thank you for giving her such a warm QVC welcome!  I hope you will be equally as welcoming to Ellen's backup guest, our friend Taniya Nyack, who is an interior decorator and design expert who you may have seen on shows like “Designed to Sell” on HGTV and “Restaurant Impossible” on the Food network. She will be the guest for our QVC E.D. On Air shows that air from our studios in West Chester. She is wonderful, and we have our first show together on Thursday, November 6th at 8pm ET.

One last note: a couple of days after I returned to PA, the most gorgeous arrangement of dozens of golden yellow, red tipped roses arrived for me at QVC Studio Park.

Yes...WOW...they were from Ellen...along with a lovely note, which I will treasure always. Thank you Ellen, for making life so much nicer in so many ways.

Love, Carolyn

PS- For those who weren't able to watch all of the fun with Ellen, here is a short clip from the show!

Homemade Thanksgiving Turkey Loaf Treat for Dogs

$

During Thanksgiving, it can be so tempting to give your fur babies a taste of the big meal!

But the fat, grease, and herbs are trouble for our furry friends. Instead, here's a special treat for your canine friends that they'll ''gobble'' up! It's yummy and healthy for them, and best of all, you can make it yourself! Of course, if you know your dog has a sensitive tummy, or has any dietary restrictions, ALWAYS check with your vet to see if they can dig into this treat. Some vets recommend not giving your dogs turkey, and you could substitute chicken.

Ingredients:

1 lb ground turkey
1 egg
1 cup cooked rice (brown or whole grain is best)
4 oz peas

1-1/2 carrots, diced
1/2 apple, diced

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375°F. In a mixing bowl, combine all ingredients and mix well (using a hand blender or by hand).

On a baking sheet, form the mixture into the shape of a large dog bone. Bake at 375°F for 45 minutes. Let cool and serve.

It's so fun to make this, and really makes you feel like your including the pups in the big day! Be sure to check out my toGather collections for Pet Lovers, and please share pictures of YOUR animals on my Facebook page anytime! Happy Gobble Day to you and all your fur babies!!

Carolyn

TALKIN' TURKEY - THE AMAZING WORK OF THE CHESTER COUNTY FOOD BANK

$

Recently Jacque Gonzales, Rick Domeier and I were lucky enough to be able to join several of our QVC colleagues to make a visit to the Chester County Food Bank, in Exton, PA, to deliver complete Thanksgiving meals for over 100 families in need, right here in our community. We did it to help feed folks who need and deserve a great meal on Thanksgiving and year round...and to help raise awareness during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. What we learned is that hunger knows no holiday…that there is a crisis of food insecurity for many families in our region and beyond. Most of these folks work hard and simply don't make enough to provide enough for their families. There are thousands of families who rely on donations from local food banks. Those food banks rely largely on donations from private citizens like you and me.

While we toured the wonderful facility that is the Chester County Food Bank, our new friends Anne and Phoebe of the food bank staff, showed us  the large refrigerator and freezer facilities where the donated perishable food is stored. We were shown the huge warehouse with stacks of bags of rice and canned goods, boxes of produce, both donated and grown by the farm that assists the food bank with freshly grown local spinach, kale, leeks, carrots, lettuce, and more, depending upon the season. We were also given a tour of the farm....which has amazingly warm hi-tunnel greenhouses that continue to grow fresh herbs and other produce even during the winter season.

The Chester County Food Bank is an amazing organization, which helps so many people to put food on their table each day. We were in awe of what they do....year round. Last year, they donated 2.6 million pounds of food to more than 100 food cupboards and meal sites throughout our county. They also partner with schools to provide a Nutrition Education Program which teaches children to make healthy food choices.

I was inspired to take a list of what was needed, go pick up my husband, and go grocery shopping for several families for Thanksgiving. We were so happy we could help. Food has the power to warm the soul and we know that by supporting the food bank, these donations are going directly to people in our area who will be able to enjoy the holiday together as a family, which is so important.

What can you do? Make a donation of time, money or food to YOUR local food bank. Donate a turkey and sides during the holiday season. Donate peanut butter, canned meats, vegetables and fruits and cereal...things that you'd find in your own pantry....year round. Host a food drive. When friends ask what they can bring to your holiday gathering, suggest a donation to the local Food Bank in your area. You can find out where yours is located by searching on the internet under Food Bank or Food Pantry, along with your zip code. You can find your local Pet Food Pantry the same way.

May you find many Blessings coming your way this holiday season and all year long. And may you find it in your heart to share them with those in need. Wishing you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving!!

Carolyn, Jacque, Rick and all of your QVC family and friends

MEET MAGGIE! Our Fur Baby of the Month for December 2014!!

$

Maggie (who already has a couple of nicknames, which always happens at our house...Mags, Maggie Sue, Miss Maggins Waggins) is our newest rescue dog!  My friends who run Main Line Animal Rescue (www.mlar.org) where I am a volunteer, had been telling me about this little girl for quite a while, because they thought she would fit in very well at our house…but a year ago, Johnnie (who we lost in March to cancer) had just had surgery and needed lots of extra attention, and it was just not the right time to consider adopting a new pet. Then, when Johnnie passed, we were so heart broken, we were not ready for a while after that. Meanwhile, Maggie was adopted....twice....and it did not work out for her either time. The same thing happened with our rescue, Daffodil, a couple of years ago. I adored her at the shelter, but others were ahead of me in line to adopt her...but after she came back the second time, I scooped her up and we never looked back.

So, a few weeks ago, we decided to bring Maggie home. Both Daffodil and Maggie had "doggie baggage" from being mistreated by previous owners. They are both so sweet, one could not imagine anyone being mean to them...but unfortunately there are "those" people in the world. Both dogs were returned by prospective adopters because of these behavior issues. However, at our house, we are very patient and also have a group of VERY well adjusted dogs who are great teachers.

Cesar Millan commented to me one time after meeting Johnnie and Jimmie that he was very impressed with how well adjusted they both were. Maggie, who is 8 years old and has spent the last several years of her life in shelters, has quickly become a welcome member of our "pack" and acts as if she has lived here all along. She is thrilled with her bed, all of her toys, and her new brothers and sisters...both canine and feline. She is VERY smart, being a poodle mix, and has very good manners, always sitting for her treats without even being asked to. We are so happy to have her at home for the holidays and for forever. Welcome Maggie!! We've been waiting for you!

Love,

Carolyn and our little Zoo

Dear D&CO Divas -

It's hard to believe 2014 is coming to a close! We've seen lots of wonderful new happenings in Denim and Company in the past year! Two of my favorite things have been getting to introduce you to our wonderful Designer, Gary Goben, who we all love having on our Denim and Company shows from time to time! My other favorite thing has been introducing you to our wondering new collection within the Denim and Company brand, called "Denim and Co Active"!! The Active collection of French terry, comfy, stretchy knit separates has been phenomenally popular and many of us already have quite a few pieces to mix and match and make outfits that we LOVE to wear! In fact, the entire fashion industry is in love with the look of "active wear" and it's becoming a huge trend in fashion for 2015!!  You'll be seeing lots of new "active" pieces from Denim and Company coming throughout the New Year!

A few days ago, we presented a brand new TSV (A261551)...our Denim and Company Active French Terry Tunic with princess seaming details and pockets. It was wildly popular and lots of customers ordered more than one…including me!! SO.....for today's Designer vs Diva Poll, Gary and I have put together two "total looks" which are "active" looks that incorporate the TSV!

We would love for you to vote on which "look" you like the best!! Gary did one look and I did the other one. Of course we are not going to reveal WHICH of US did WHICH LOOK until two weeks from now, during a special Designer vs Diva Denim and Company Tuesday morning show on January 13th! As always, we BOTH love each look, but it's fun to hear what YOU think of the fashions and to read your comments, so be sure to leave them here when you vote!! See if you can determine which of us did which outfit?

Meanwhile, here are some details on each look:

Look Number 1: "Active Inspired"

This look features the recent D&Co Active Tunic (A261551) in an outfit that would be great year round, and is  terrific for running around doing errands, taking care of your busy lifestyle with kids, grandkids and pets OR making a stop at the gym or yoga class along the way! It works really well with all of your current and/or new Active pieces in your wardrobe.

The first piece is a D&Co fleece zip front jacket with pockets, princess seams, long sleeves and a stand collar, with a length ranging from 25 1/2 to 29 3/4 inches. The second piece is A260069, our D&Co Duo Stretch leggings with pintuck detail. These are fitted and slimming, with a wide elastic waistband with sits just slightly below the waist. They are 90% cotton and 10% spandex. This outfit would look great paired with your favorite Rykas or Skechers in lots of fun colors.

Look Number 2: "Weekend Casual Inspired"

This look features the recent D&Co Active Tunic (A261551) in an outfit that can also be worn year round, and is comfortable yet suitable for a casual workplace or lunch with friends, as well getting out and about to check off  your daily "to do" list. It is versatile enough to work with many things in your wardrobe.

The first piece is the D & Co stretch denim jacket with mandarin color, long sleeves, button front, on seam pockets and high-low hem. It is semi-fitted and made of 98% cotton, and 2 percent spandex. The length ranges from 23 3/4 to 28 inches. The second piece is A260392, the Denim and Co "How Modern" slightly boot cut jeans. These are a 5-pocket style, with fly front and button closure. My Cruisin' Vacation!!

Ahoy, my friends!

My husband and I recently returned from a wonderful cruise vacation to the Eastern Caribbean, aboard the brand new Royal Caribbean ship, Quantum of the Seas. We enjoy going on cruises, and this was certainly not our first, but it was one of the most fun and relaxing yet!! As promised, I'm posting a photo blog of some of my favorite photos from our vacation, to share with you.

We visited St Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands, as well as St. Kitts and St. Maarten, in the West Indies. The weather was beautiful and warm, as only the Caribbean can provide!

We did not meet any swashbuckling pirates this time, but we did make friends with two tiny and very clever green top monkeys, found some fabulous shopping finds, did lots of walking, caught up on our reading, enjoyed the fun poolside, and were treated to delicious food and incredible entertainment all week long! We also met several lovely QVC customers who happened to be on board the same cruise. :)

Our stateroom attendant, Gusti, from Indonesia, has quite a talent for creating cute animals out of bath towels!! He made us a swan, a sloth, a monkey and a pig!

Of course, the Caribbean sunsets are spectacular!!

I highly recommend taking a cruise vacation sometime if you can.....the enjoyable memories you'll make will last a lifetime! AND, we have some great things at the Q to help you plan :)

See you soon on the Q!!

Hello, my friends!

What a fun Awards Show last night! It looks like many of your furbabies were right in predicting the big winners! Last week, I asked you to share who you were hoping would sweep up the most awards, AND who your furry friends wanted to win! I absolutely loved all of your responses, and THANK YOU for sending in your pictures! Here's a showcase of some of them :)

XO-

Carolyn

1. "Barley just hopes there's plenty of popcorn and his favorite Berkshire fluffie throw for tonight's award show!"

2. Snippy catnapping

3. Petie says Birdman because 1) he loves (to chase) birds, and 2) he loves Pittsburgh, and Michael Keaton is from Pittsburgh. I'm from Pittsburgh, and birds are cool - so I have to agree with Petie!

4. Casey and Bones like American Sniper

5. Koi says he doesn't watch movies!

6. Princess Effie likes The Theory of Everything

7. Elsa and Molly were all snuggled up watching American Sniper. Anything by Clint Eastwood is golden!

8. Bailey is wearing his tuxedo in honor of the Big Awards Show, he predicts American Sniper will win!

9. Gotta go with "American Sniper". Koa practices sneaking up on me every day. Aloha!!!

10. Misty loved American Sniper

Best Gardening Tips

Leslie:

Run your fingernails over a bar of soap before starting. Makes for easy cleanup and no digging at dirt under your fingernails when you're done.

Pat:

Plant perennials!! Least maintenance and expense. Love my daylilies!!!

Linda:

Plant potatoes around the perimeter of your garden. If you need to dust for bugs you aren’t contaminating the produce and bugs won’t move into the inside of your garden.

Mickey:

Best advice I received many years ago is to remember that gardening is a process that requires patience. Sure comes in handy now that I live in the mountains of Utah. At 6500' it takes a year or two to get the results most people get the first year…but worth the wait!

Teresa:

Use disposable diapers in the bottom of hanging baskets for extra moisture!

Zella:

Never plant before Mother's Day! (I grew-up in Delaware.)

Kim:

The best garden tip I have is don't give up on your dream that you can grow a garden. I live in Florida, and it's hard to grow a lot of things, but sometimes just moving a plant from one area to another is enough to see it thrive.

Susan:

Patience! Perennials take time to get established. My mom always said "The first year they sleep, second year they creep & the third year they leap!"

Charleen:

Before you place your hydrangea in the ground, plant a penny. It adds acidity to the soil which will give you vibrant blue flowers. Tip comes from my mother who always had the most gorgeous hydrangeas!

Carol:

Best tip I ever read was using human hair, saved from haircuts, on rose bushes. Sounds weird right? But this tip was wonderful, made my roses grow and thrive.

Tina:

Place plastic down then cut a hole for your plant. No weeds!

Ann:

Use cut grass clippings fermented in water overnight as a fertilizer - it stinks to high heaven but it works amazingly to make BIG healthy plants.  This tips is from an old (94) Italian gardener friend.

Linda:

Take all your shredded paper, place around plants and wet down. NO WEEDS!!! I save my shredded paper all winter.

Nancy:

Terra cotta planters are porous, so they evaporate quicker. You'll need to water plants in those containers more often.

Shirley:

Cut potatoes for planting. Just lay them on top of ground cover with hay and you will have a good crop. Ground doesn't have to be worked. Potato will have little dirt on it. Really neat, AND it works!

Rhonda:

Gerber Daisies are the easiest to grow…they come back every year, but they need lots of sun & water. One of my favorites.

Linda:

In 1964 my grandmother gave me poppies from her garden and told me to plant them when it was the dark side of the moon. They have come up every year since!

Mj:

To feed roses monthly-a mix of crushed egg shells and shredded banana peels. It makes them bloom magnificently.

Jo Ann:

Using newspaper under mulch to control WEEDS works great!

Patti:

Hire a landscaper.
